LED Medical Diagnostics Inc. (“LED Medical”, “the Company”), said today that a five minute oral health exam once a year might be the difference between detecting pre-cancer and oral cancer in early stages rather than late stages, which in turn can be the difference between life and death.
“A comprehensive oral health exam takes only five minutes,” said said Peter Whitehead, founder and CEO of LED Medical Diagnostics and its subsidiary, LED Dental. According to Mr. Whitehead, the first part of a comprehensive exam — the conventional oral exam, consisting of visual inspection and palpation — takes about three minutes; the second part — an adjunctive exam using LED Dental’s VELscope® Vx Enhanced Oral Assessment System, – takes about two minutes.
Clinical studies and feedback from practicing dentists indicate that the combination of a conventional oral examination and a VELscope® Vx examination can help clinicians detect early stage oral cancer, as well as other disease, that otherwise might have been missed. “Detecting oral cancer in early stages is crucial, but the fact is that it’s usually detected in late stages.” said Mr. Whitehead. “That’s why the percentage of oral cancer patients who ultimately die of the disease is higher than for many other cancers.” When oral cancer is discovered in late stages, the five-year survival rate is only about 50 percent; when discovered early, however, the survival rate leaps to about 83%. “For thousands of people a year, that’s the difference between dying and surviving.”
According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, just over 41,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer this year, and approximately 8,000 — or one person every hour of every day — will die of the disease. LED Medical Diagnostics developed its VELscope® adjunctive technology to help clinicians detect oral cancer and other oral disease in early stages, and it is now the world’s most frequently used technology for that purpose.
“Getting an annual comprehensive oral health exam couldn’t be easier,” said Mr. Whitehead. “Not only does it only take five minutes, but it can be given as part of a regular hygiene check-up. What’s more, the exams are totally painless, and they’re usually very affordable. In fact, more and more insurance providers are covering the cost. Frankly, I can’t think of a better way to spend five minutes.” He added that people wanting to find a nearby dental practice that offers VELscope® exams can do so at LED Dental.
